Cis white guy on the internet made a breathtaking claim today, saying, “supporting an entire (race/gender/sexual orientation/other marginalized group) is bigoted, and they’re the real oppressors.”
Included was a quote from a good marginalized person, about how bringing attention to the discrimination and prejudice they face is bad. The quote was probably from Morgan Freeman.
The man was met with backlash by people who he calls “social justice warriors”, and claims that by bringing attention to his homophobia/transphobia/racism/misogyny they are “silencing my freedom of speech”.
He was also shocked that they took it personally, and pointed out that he could keep calm when discussing whether the group he’s not in should have rights, “so why can’t they?”
“I mean, yeah marginalized groups get killed, lose jobs, get segregated and kicked out of homes, but like, they may be able to apply for a small bursary for it. I don’t get that. I’m the real victim here.”
He seemed surprised to hear that human rights have historically been achieved by bringing attention to them, and not sitting quietly at home.
“It just seems like it puts an inconvenience on everyone else. I mean, blocking roads to bring attention to trans women and girls being segregated and discriminated against in North Carolina? I don’t want to think about that stuff.”
Alternatively he suggests “asking nicely”, and “not causing such a big scene”.
“You don’t see me causing a big scene, do you?”
